The federal deficit is averaging in the mid one trillion range for several years now. Total federal debt is almost $16 trillion. These are massive numbers for sure, and they should concern us, but it is not these numbers for which to focus our attention. Instead, our focus should be on the dysfunction in government, and I say this as a liberal who believes in a government of the people.

Grover Norquist, the “tax pledge” guy, called former president George H.W. Bush a liar this morning on This Week. “When George Herbert Walker Bush ran for president, he promised the American people he wouldn’t raise their taxes,” said Norquist. “He lied to them. He broke his commitment to them and they threw him out of office four years later.” For some history here, Bush famously said “read my lips – no new taxes” during his run for president in 1988.

Everyone who believes in democracy and the right to vote, which is fundamental right in a democracy, should have a problem with any effort to make voting more difficult. If you are a liberal or a Democrat and you didn’t vote in the 2010 midterm election then you only have yourself to blame if you are concerned about all the new voter ID laws that have passed in Republican controlled states. According to the Melissa Harris-Perry show and the Brennan Center for Justice, at least 180 bills were introduced in 41 states to restrict voting rights since the beginning of 2011.

Voting in this country is a right, and we should never allow it to be compared to things that are not rights (in the context of the voter ID law debate). We all know this, well at least those of us who value equal rights. The following quote is an excellent statement on the right to vote in America. What does a political party do when they become increasing ideologically pure and cater to a smaller portion of the electorate? They do whatever they can to suppress the vote. Polls and studies show that on average, the more people who vote in an election, the more likely it is to benefit the Democratic Party. So the Republican Party is going to do whatever it can to suppress the vote and limit voting rights. They will also do whatever is necessary to make Americans lose faith in the system altogether. If you think your vote won’t make a difference you might not vote at all, and Republicans have no problem with this.

It’s been a week since Mitt Romney announced Paul Ryan as his running mate, and in this past week we’ve seen Ryan running away from the two big things that he is known for. If it wasn’t for the “Ryan budget” or his love-affair with Ayn Rand, Paul Ryan would just be another congressman. And if that was the case, it’s probably safe to say he would not have been on Romney’s VP short-list. So why is Paul Ryan running away from the very things that got him on that list to begin with? Did Mitt Romney make a mistake or is this a deceptively clever plan to win the White House?
