On The Daily Beast, Michael Tomasky explains to us liberals who oppose military action in Syria, how we are enabling the tyrants of the world. His article reads like an extension of the warmongering coming from Secretary of State John Kerry. The entire premise of the piece is predicated on the idea that we inherently know how the dictators and tyrants of the world will respond absent U.S. action. But we don’t actually “know” this.

Yesterday I pointed out 5 misguided arguments for American military action against Syria, but there’s a 6th much less publicized argument in favor of war in Syria. And it’s the most ridiculous reason of all. There are more than a few Christians who believe American military action in Syria, more specially the ancient city of Damascus, will lead to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

As discussed on The Rachel Maddow Show tonight, there are alternatives to American military strikes against the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria. While there are no options that will result in an immediate halt to human suffering in Syria, we know military action, particularly a strike designed to “send a message,” will only add to the human carnage. It will only result in more destruction, more death, more suffering. So let’s consider 4 alternatives to American military action in Syria.

The Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, received a question from a Christian audience member asking why Rudd changed his position on same-sex marriage. The Prime Minister’s response is just about the best smack down of Christian opposition to marriage equality that I’ve seen to date, particularly by someone of high office. But his response is much more than a rebuke, it’s an incredibly articulate, powerful and persuasive argument in favor of same-sex marriage. And the best this Christian could muster was to say “marriage is between husbands and wives, and Jesus said…” I don’t need to continue, you get the idea. Check out the video below. Trust me, it’s worth watching the whole thing.

So it looks like we are getting ourselves involved in yet another war. And I don’t really care what the Obama administration wants to call it. When you launch cruise missiles into another country, that’s an act of war. You can attempt justify it, you can make your case, and even if you were correct, it changes nothing. War is war. Or let’s put it another way so that everyone can understand. If another country took an aggressive action against the United States, and we called that aggression an act of war (which we would), than it is still an act of war when we do it to them.

In fact, there are many people who do work on Labor Day. But this day was created to recognize organized labor, and the labor movement that made it possible for people to form unions. And those unions are responsible for giving us the 40-hour work week, better working conditions, the weekend, and better pay. Even if you never belonged to a union, the effect unions have on the job marketplace has helped us all – a rising tide lifts all boats.

Over two years after the earthquake and tsunami that destroyed entire towns and left Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant crippled and dangerously unstable, it’s hard to get this issue to rise above all the other news (and noise). BBC News reports that radioactive water leaked into the ground last week, and measurements show levels high enough to “prove lethal within four hours of exposure.” This is a problem that is not going away anytime soon.
