Even if the violence has no direct impact on your life, indirectly your wallet will feel the effects. That might seem a callous way to make people care about gun violence, but for some, money is the biggest motivator for change.

Because of the NSA leaks by Edward Snowden, not only are we fully aware of the violations to our civil liberties, we also know our tax dollars are being used against us, in the name of national security. There’s a lot of money being spent on a shiny new police state, and what is it buying us? — Less freedom. Less liberty. That’s not a very good bargain.

Most Americans now believe marijuana should be legal. Most have realized the war on drugs, especially when it comes to pot, has been an abysmal failure. And most people know alcohol is a much more potent and deadly drug than weed. Alcohol is responsible for thousands of deaths per day, and countless hardships, yet it remains legal. And it should remain legal, because we know prohibition doesn’t work.

At a faculty workshop at Totino-Grace Catholic High School in Fridley, Minnesota, Kristen Ostendorf told her colleagues “I’m gay, I’m in a relationship with a woman, and I’m happy.” She said the “make your mark” theme of the workshop combined with the firing of the school president (also gay) in July prompted her to come out to her co-workers. But the next day the school administration told her she must resign or face termination. She did not want to quit her job and so the school promptly fired her.

On September 5th, Walmart workers around the country rallied for better wages, benefits and a little thing called respect. The rally in Raleigh, North Carolina had a special flare with a well-coordinated and peaceful flash mob assembly. Walmart is the biggest employer in America with over one million workers. With that many employers, Walmart can only get away with their labor practices for so long. Eventually the people will fight back. This flash mob is likely only the beginning.
