Assault Weapons: No One Needs Those Guns

On Tuesday night, Rachel Maddow’s guests were the siblings of Newtown shooting victim Victoria Soto, who was a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Rachel asked Carlos Matthew Soto, brother of Victoria, what he would like to see congress change. “It would probably be the assault weapon ban. Just because, no one needs those guns,” said Soto. “There’s no reason to have them unless your military.”

The Conservative Republican Delusion

There are some Republicans who recognize that their party needs to change if it’s going to be competitive in future presidential elections. Yes, Republicans still hold a majority in the House of Representatives, and Republicans will be able to easily win a number of Senate and House races for years to come, but it’s the top office in the land where the math is not in their favor. When you’ve lost California’s 55 electoral votes before the contest has even begun, that’s a problem.

Is the President of the United States a Dictator?

It would seem many conservatives think the President of the United States is an impervious leader, capable of just about anything he puts his mind to. A dictator if you will. No, I’m not talking about the current president, Barack Obama, rather the office itself. How else do you explain their reasoning when they say the president ought to be able to show leadership and convince Republicans to come around to his position? Well, they don’t exactly say that of course, but the Republicans and conservatives who acknowledge that Obama has faced stiff opposition from congressional Republicans say that it is up to Obama to show leadership, essentially willing legislation to pass regardless of the level of opposition.
