Even though Republican lawmakers, Fox News pundits and conservatives at large believe the debt ceiling puts a limit on federal spending, that doesn’t make it so. The debt ceiling (or limit) is a 1917 law (part of the Second Liberty Bond Act) that gave the executive branch power to take on debt without congressional approval. So it sounds like Mitch McConnell and other Republicans are right when they say President Obama wants to do away with the debt limit so that he has the free rein to spend all he wants, right? — Wrong! Only congress can authorize new spending. However, it is up to the Treasury Department to actually pay the bills, and Treasury is part of the executive branch. And when the federal government is running a deficit, that means some bills are paid by loan (government bonds).

Since the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2010 I’ve been wondering just how long it will take for people to realize that they should now revert back to the old way of saying the year. Since the year 2000 and through 2009 (and beyond for some), we have been saying the year in “thousands,” but up until that time we said the year in two distinct parts. In 1999, did you say “One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety Nine”? No, I didn’t think so. And it certainly would have made for a less than catchy chorus in a popular Prince song. So why are you now saying “Two Thousand Thirteen” when you could say “Twenty Thirteen”? You realize it’s one less syllable, right?

Nearly 500 people have been murdered by a gun in the United States of America since the horrible mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Those are the victims. The children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School are the victims. — Gun advocates are not the victims. Card-carrying NRA members are not the victims. People who talk tough but need a gun to be tough are not the victims. People who justify the need for violent assault weapons for protection or sport are not the victims. — So yeah, gun advocates, you can spare me your righteous indignation.

So I’m driving to work today along the same highway I use every day to get to work and I see the same two Romney-Ryan signs in the grassy area between northbound and southbound traffic. There is a lot of reporting that Republicans voted for a tax increase for the first time in decades when both the House and Senate voted to approve the “fiscal cliff” bill. This is false. While it could be seen as a technicality, it’s a technicality that matters when it comes to politics in Washington.

The House of Representatives passed the Senate fiscal cliff bill by 90 votes, and it has not gone unnoticed by this liberal that both the Senate and the House votes happened in the new year. It means not a single Republican voted for a tax increase since all tax cuts expired at midnight before either of the votes. How convenient.

In the early hours of the new year, the U.S. Senate voted and approved the fiscal cliff deal 89 to 8. This is a much wider margin than most could have even predicted, which really puts the pressure on the House of Representatives to pass the bill. The problem is, it’s the House of Representatives, led by Speaker John Boehner who has no control over the ultra-conservative (radical actually) tea party Republicans.
