Why We Don’t Vote On Rights, Summarized In A Question

Washington state is just days away from becoming the 7th state to legalize same-sex marriage and an appeals court has ruled California’s same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional.

Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.

The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.

With same-sex marriage front and center in the news this week, we are hearing the same tired arguments from the Right against marriage equality. I have one simple question that should make it clear why human rights should NEVER be put up for a vote.

Should we have put slavery up for a vote in the South?
