You Can’t Bridge The Gun Chasm

Bridge Washout - photo by Steve WhiteAfter two months of gun control and gun rights rhetoric, there is one thing that has become painfully obvious — there’s simply no way we can span the fissure between gun “rights” advocates and gun “control” advocates. I’m not sure even the most skilled arbiter could bring forth a workable solution for both sides. One side believes nothing should be done to existing gun laws, well, except to further weaken them. The other side wants very strict controls, up to and including bans on certain types of firearms.

The Second Amendment Right To “Keep And Bear Arms” Is Not Absolute

Just as other constitutional rights are not absolute, like freedom of speech, the right to “keep and bear arms” is not unlimited. The idea of equally applied rights is not in question here. What is in question is the scope of each right. Where one person’s right infringes upon another person’s right, that is where the line is drawn. Just as there are reasonable limits on the reach of free speech, so too can there be reasonable limits on the arms one can bear.

America’s Gun Culture: It’s Not Naive To Think We Can Change Minds

I know many gun owners and gun enthusiasts think liberals like myself are simply naive. — That we lack experience with guns. — That we lack the proper knowledge to talk about guns. — That we are silly to think we can change America’s obsession with guns. — But it is these same gun advocates who hold the naive belief that the “bad guys” will always have access to guns so we need to arm the “good guys.”

Gun Violence: There Is A “Newtown” Every Day In America, And We Ignore It

It seems we Americans only take notice to gun violence when a sufficient number of fellow Americans are gunned down in one place. And if that location is not the inner-city, then we pay even closer attention. And if the victims are children, well, that’s what it takes to even start a conversation in this country. That’s what it takes to start talking about proposing new gun safety legislation.
