According to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) website (“The State of Working America“), “inequality has risen sharply over the last several decades.” In fact, the EPI reports that 38.3% of all wealth growth from 1983 to 2010 went to the top 1%, and 74.2% went to the top 5%. What happened to the bottom 60%? They saw their wealth decline.

I have a secret to reveal. I used to regularly shop at Walmart. I live in the outer stretches of Philadelphia’s western suburbs, and Walmart happened to be the closest place to go food shopping. I was never enthusiastic about shopping at Walmart, and as my social and political views evolved, I grew even more uneasy with contributing my money to a company in opposition to my values. So nearly three years ago I stopped food shopping at Walmart, and in fact, I don’t think I’ve stepped foot inside a Walmart since then.

The people who call themselves the true defenders of freedom and the real Americans resemble neither when they are on the short end of an election result.

I’m a big fan of routine, of knowing how things work, and not needing to constantly re-adjust my expectations. And I think this is true of most people. But post-election, it seems fear of change for many (white) conservatives is palpable. Conservatives see a rapidly changing America, and it scares them. Their fear is not based on a tangible threat, but rather a sense that America is heading to a different and unknown destination. I get it; change is scary. The unknown is scary. I get that people prefer the devil they know. — But should this fear of the unknown hold us back from embracing what makes America unique?

Even though Representative Peter King (R-NY) cannot cite a specific apology by President Obama, he still insists (as do many Republicans) that Obama went on an “apology tour” around the Middle East shortly after becoming president. On Monday, in an interview with CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, King said, “Any commonsense interpretation of those speeches, the president’s apologizing for the American position. That’s the apology tour.”
