If you aren’t watching The Newsroom then you should be. It’s a new Aaron Sorkin show on HBO that combines a great cast with a unique method of weaving real-life events, politicians, and public figures into the world of ACN (Atlantis Cable News), a fictional news network that competes with the real-life Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is the anchor of a fictional 8pm news program on ACN called News Night.

Grover Norquist, the “tax pledge” guy, called former president George H.W. Bush a liar this morning on This Week. “When George Herbert Walker Bush ran for president, he promised the American people he wouldn’t raise their taxes,” said Norquist. “He lied to them. He broke his commitment to them and they threw him out of office four years later.” For some history here, Bush famously said “read my lips – no new taxes” during his run for president in 1988.

Voting in this country is a right, and we should never allow it to be compared to things that are not rights (in the context of the voter ID law debate). After being introduced as Mitt Romney’s running mate on Saturday, Representative Paul Ryan (WI-R) said that America was founded on an idea. What is the idea? Ryan said, “Our rights, come from nature and God, not from government.” Oh really? Ryan, which God are you referring to? The Christian God? I’m willing to bet there are Americans who are members of a different faith who might think their rights come from God too. The problem is that the rights people believe they have from God might not exactly line up depending on which God they pray to. This is why Paul Ryan is wrong.

Every time one of these mass-shooting, mass-murder events happens in the United States we see headlines like “Americans in shock,” and descriptive words like horror and terror, but do you see a problem here? Did you notice that I started this article by saying “every time,” which indicates this is not a rare event. The fact is, while overall crime statistics are at 20 (even 30) year lows in many categories (including murder) we still have mass-shooting events occurring with regular frequency. Each one of us has essentially come to expect that these mass-shooting events are going to happen regularly. So is there anything shocking about it?

Romney has an interesting line to walk: On the one hand he wants to be seen as a “regular guy” who knows what it’s like to live as a “commoner” in America. On the other hand, he wants to be seen as the successful business leader who knows how to make money for business.
