PA Sen. Pat Toomey: Only A ‘Small Segment’ Of Americans Are In Need

Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) apparently believes the poverty problem in this country is overblown. At least that is what I interpret from his statement that Americans “who really need help” are only a “small segment of our society.” Toomey made these statements while unveiling the Senate Republican budget plan for 2013. Toomey and his budget cohorts have concluded that the current assistance programs “encourage dependency.” This is nothing new, many Republicans have made similar statements for years and decades. Every time I hear a Republican make a claim like this I ask, “where’s your proof?” Well OK, I haven’t asked them personally, but you know what I mean.

The Catholic League’s Campaign Against Jon Stewart

On the April 16, 2012 episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, in a segment mocking Fox News criticism of the phrase “war on women,” Stewart said women should make use of “vagina mangers” for protection. A photo accompanied this segment showing a naked woman with strategically placed manger (see video below). The Catholic League claims this was a “unprecented assault on Christian sensibilities.” This is not to be confused with the unprecedented sexual assaults of minors by Catholic priests, well, because unfortunately those assaults were so numerous they could hardly be called unprecedented.

Video: Sen. Bernie Sanders Says U.S. Moving To Oligarchic Government

Speaking on the Senate floor on Monday, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said that the United States is moving away from democracy and toward an oligarchy. Sanders said, “the United States is departing from its democratic tradition, which has always included a strong and growing middle class, and is moving rapidly into an oligarchic form of government in which almost all wealth and power reside in the hands of the very richest people in our society, the top one percent.”

A Brief: The State Of Capitalism In The United States Of America

I want to make one point very clear, there has never been a “free market” in the United States. If lobbyists can descend on Washington to sway congress to shape legislation in favor of their clients (corporations) then there is nothing free about the marketplace of capitalism in this country. A free market would mean no oversight, no favors, and no regulations. I’m not saying that would be desirable, I’m simply pointing out a fact that gets overlooked when people talk about the free market. They are talking about something that doesn’t exist.

Spitzer Sums Up Romney Campaign Strategy: Lie About Obama

Mitt Romney was speaking at the NRA today and said, “This administration’s attack on freedom extends even to rights explicitly guaranteed by the constitution: the right to bear arms is so plainly stated, so unambiguous, that liberals have a hard time challenging it directly. Instead they have been employing every imaginable rouse and ploy to restrict it, and to defeat it.” Funny, last time I checked the Obama administration has done nothing when it comes to stricter gun laws. Nothing.

The One-Way Street Of Gun Laws In America

Have you ever noticed how gun laws are increasingly going in one direction? Whether its “stand your ground” laws or a proposed “open carry” law in Oklahoma, it seems the only gun laws proposed are ones that make it easier to buy and use a firearm. When will humans evolve beyond the need for such primitive and violent symbols of strength? Republicans, conservatives and gun owners are becoming increasingly paranoid about a world that they feel is more dangerous than ever. Nevermind crime statistics that say otherwise. They want guns and they want them now. But that’s not enough, now they want to openly display how much heat they are packing. A proposed law in Oklahoma would allow residents of that state to flaunt their weaponry when out in public. Police are opposed to this measure because they believe it will make their job more difficult.
