Conservatives loathe “big government.” I mean, they hate it with a passion. But their antipathy for big government is manufactured from a false pretense that larger government leads to smaller individual liberty. It’s hard to believe something as complex as the United States government, in a country with a population over 300 million, could be boiled down to a zero sum game of government vs. liberty, but that’s conservative logic for ya.

If there are conservatives in your family, this may sound all-too-familiar.

Democrats will need to go above and beyond to be trusted when it comes to their opinion on the NSA leak by Edward Snowden. What do I mean by that? With a Democrat in the White House, I don’t trust Democrats who say Snowden is a traitor. Similarly, I don’t trust Republicans, particularly libertarians, who say Snowden is a patriot or a hero.

Washington Representative Jim McDermott (D) was right to call yesterday’s IRS hearing “political theater.”

If there is a fundamental reason to attack false equivalence, it would be the difference between what fuels conservatives and what fuels liberals. There are no shortage of personal attacks lobbed from both sides, but there is one key difference — conservatives resent “other” people; liberals resent bygone policy (usually supported by conservatives).

It really is silly season in the world of political coverage. Fox News has found it’s smoking gun…or guns. Benghazi, IRS, DOJ, you name it. Fox News and conservative media aren’t interested in actual wrong-doing, they have found their smoking gun, even if they can’t exactly name it.

How about this for breaking news — the news network with the tagline “The Place For Politics” doesn’t shine in the ratings department when the biggest news stories are not political. Is this really a shock to anyone? In May, MSNBC slipped to 4th place behind Fox News, CNN and HLN. This was a time of breaking news like tornadoes, and a murder trial (no, I won’t even mention the name). Usually MSNBC is a distant second to the near worship-like dominance of Fox News. Of course, ratings don’t prove that you are delivering a factually sound product, it just means you are delivering what a fervent audience wants to hear. And when it comes to faux scandals during a democratic administration, the faux news network known as Fox News is definitely your source. When it comes to coverage of non-political breaking news, CNN’s longstanding name recognition wins out. “We’re not the place for that [breaking news],” said MSNBC president Phil Griffin. “Our brand is not that.” Indeed.

Three weeks ago Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren introduced a bill that would give students the same interest rate on their loans that banks get from the Federal Reserve.
