RNC – More Republican Duality from Governors Scott Walker, Bob McDonnell

Between Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) and Governor Bob McDonnell (R-VA) the Republican duality posits that President Obama is bad for jobs on a national scale at the same time that they [Republican governors] are good for jobs in their respective states. Pay no attention to the federal stimulus spending in their states. They [Republican governors] are solely responsible for their job growth and unemployment rates and President Obama’s policies and the stimulus had nothing to do with it. In other words: The good news? “Yeah, that’s us” — The bad news? “That’s all Obama” — Oh, and “Republicans Rule!”

For Republicans, Duality is a State Of Mind, a Means To An End

Republicans exist in their own special place and time. A place that is loose with facts, stuffed with contradictory statements and topped off with hyperbolic rhetoric. Whatever will get the job done. Their soon-to-be nominee for president, Mitt Romney is the poster child of Republican duality. For Republicans this is simply a state of mind. The goal is to win the White House and take full control of U.S. government. Convictions are less important than ultimate power, and so Republicans willingly trample on their own statements and previous policy positions. It’s a means to an end.

The Problem is not Debt, it is Dysfunction

Dysfunction JunctionThe federal deficit is averaging in the mid one trillion range for several years now. Total federal debt is almost $16 trillion. These are massive numbers for sure, and they should concern us, but it is not these numbers for which to focus our attention. Instead, our focus should be on the dysfunction in government, and I say this as a liberal who believes in a government of the people.

Republicans Say Tax Cuts Do Not Stimulate The Economy

Good, stay with me for a moment. — So we all know Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and every other beltway Republican is on record as saying the “stimulus” didn’t work. When we say stimulus, we are talking about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This piece of legislation, passed in the first months of the Obama administration, contained tax incentives for companies, tax breaks for individuals, infrastructure investment, education funding, and more. Fully one-third of the “stimulus” was in the form of tax cuts.

The Facts: Obama vs. Bush On Job Creation

First let’s get this out-of-the-way. Presidents are not job creators. They don’t wave a wand and poof, magically there are millions of new jobs. Presidents can set the tone for policy and they can have a major influence on congressional legislation that can lead to favorable economic conditions for job growth. But this is clearly a much more muddy process than we like to believe when we talk presidents and job creation.
