Pat Robertson Says He Favors Legalization of Marijuana

On Wednesday, evangelical leader Pat Robertson told The New York Times that he believes marijuana should be legal. This puts Robertson ahead of our elected officials – who have been cowards on this issue – and aligned with majority opinion. It also means that I agree with Pat Robertson. That will probably be the one and only time you will ever see me write that. Hey Pat, let’s not make this a habit, ok?

Robertson told The New York Times:

I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol…I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think, ‘this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded.’

Robertson said he endorses ballot measures in Colorado and Washington meant to lessen penalties for marijuana use but would not actively campaign for them. Robertson said his reason for supporting marijuana legalization is because the country “has gone overboard on this concept of being tough on crime.”

Robertson is right, – oh no, there it is again – it’s time we took a new approach. The 30-year long drug war has been a massive failure.
