What does a political party do when they become increasing ideologically pure and cater to a smaller portion of the electorate? They do whatever they can to suppress the vote. Polls and studies show that on average, the more people who vote in an election, the more likely it is to benefit the Democratic Party. So the Republican Party is going to do whatever it can to suppress the vote and limit voting rights. They will also do whatever is necessary to make Americans lose faith in the system altogether. If you think your vote won’t make a difference you might not vote at all, and Republicans have no problem with this.

Paul Krugman has a short piece titled “Reasonable Republicans?” where he makes a point that I’ve made in the past, that there are no reasonable Republicans serving in office. That’s not to say there are no reasonable Republicans at all, just that they all exist outside the beltway. They might be former aids to past Republican presidential administrations or they could be ex-congressman, but they all have one thing in common, they are no longer serving, and they are no longer considered part of the Republican establishment.

The Republican Party is in need of therapy. They keep trying to fix problems that don’t exist.

Jon Huntsman announced he will not be attending the Republican convention later this summer. This would not be news except for the reason he gave for not attending. Huntsman said, “I will not be attending this year’s convention, nor any Republican convention in the future, until the party focuses on a bigger, bolder, more confident future for the United States – a future based on problem solving, inclusiveness, and a willingness to address the trust deficit, which is every bit as corrosive as our fiscal and economic deficits.” I once again say Jon Huntsman is Mr. Reasonable. This doesn’t mean I would support many of his policies, but at least he isn’t in lockstep with a party that thinks government and politics is a big game to be utilized to favor the wealthy ruling class while impoverishing the already impoverished.

We already know the Republican narrative of “too much government regulation” and “a president that is hostile towards business and capitalism” is nonsense, but now we have even more evidence that Republicans are full of shit.

Republicans would have you believe that the economy, the deficit and even much of our long-term debt is on the shoulders of President Obama. Republicans in the House, particularly Tea Party Republicans, threatened to ruin the credit worthiness of the United States (although many would not acknowledge it) in last summer’s debt ceiling showdown. In fact, just days after they reached an agreement to increase the debt ceiling, Standard & Poor’s downgraded the credit rating of the U.S. government bond for the first time ever.
