And if that location is not the inner-city, then we pay even closer attention. And if the victims are children, well, that’s what it takes to even start a conversation in this country. Gun advocates and NRA members say “guns don’t kill people; people kill people.” Fine. I’ll accept this premise if it enables bipartisan cooperation for sensible gun safety legislation. So if the problem is not the guns, but the people, there are two regulatory measures congress should get to work on now. These two measures regulate the people side of the gun safety equation, not the gun side.

I’m at a point on the “gun issue” where I honestly don’t care what gun owners have to say — that is, if you insist on defending material ownership rights above all else, including calls for a national conversation on gun control. Most people calling for tougher gun laws are not in favor of a prohibition on firearms. I’m included in that group. We know prohibition doesn’t work.

It is another day in America, and that means another violent mass shooting event — this time at an elementary school in Connecticut. Reports are sketchy at this point, but NBC News is reporting 26 dead including 18 children, but these numbers are likely to change.

I’m talking to you card-carrying NRA member or anyone who says “now is not the time to talk about gun control.” This is the standard refrain after each violent high-profile event involving guns. Quite honestly, I’m tired of hearing it.
