I’d like to think more extreme weather and natural events would convince people climate change is not some liberal conspiracy, but the power of the right-wing media machine is formidable. It’s a common refrain from Republicans that regulations are bad for business and will kill jobs. They need not offer any proof, just like most claims from Republicans, they simply state it as fact. Fine, let’s take them at their word. In fact, I do believe there are some situations where regulations could lead to job losses, but my response is “so what?” Hear me out for a few moments.

But conservatives have managed to change the public discourse on climate change to the point where it’s shocking to find out a Republican governor actually believes climate change is real. I’m talking about Ohio Governor John Kasich who last week said the following to a GOP fundraiser audience:

In a rare event from the conservative side of the aisle, a Republican meteorologist, Paul Douglas, penned a powerful article on the reality of climate change, how it is already affecting us, and how it will impact us long-term, particularly if so many continue to deny reality. I can’t say I agree with everything Douglas writes about in his article but even the parts I disagree with are still coming from the right place. For example, I do think private businesses will have to play a role in solving this problem but climate change is such a huge problem it will required mandates from governments around the world to effect any real change.
