MSNBC’s New Lean Forward-Less Graphics Package

If you haven’t yet noticed, MSNBC made a major change to their graphics package starting this past weekend. I first noticed it on Up with Steve Kornacki on Saturday 8/15. The revamped graphics package appears to be in use across all live programming on MSNBC. Gone is the show and network branding at the top of the screen. “Lean Forward” is not to be found anywhere. Did they officially retire that slogan? It appears there are no graphics at the top of the screen during shows with the exception of split-screen segments. Also notable, is that show branding is kept to a minimum, only seen for about a second in the lower right corner of the screen at the start of a show and when returning from commercials. That area then morphs into the new MSNBC logo which has returned to all capital letters (the logo had been all lowercase since 2009).

Beating Back The Bern: Shilling For Hillary Clinton By Proxy

Something I’ve noticed in the past few days on social media is the backlash against Bernie Sanders supporters by certain “liberals.” To be clear, I put “liberals” in quotes because they are acting more like protectors of the establishment and not the liberals they claim to be. Hillary Clinton defenders are starting to “#FeelTheBern” and they are lashing out.

There’s No Off Position On The Gun Rights Switch

We often hear about elderly who crash their car because they confused the gas pedal for the brake pedal (I witnessed this years ago in Burger King parking lot), or any number of other reasons why someone of advanced age could wreck their car. And we hope in these cases the only people they hurt are themselves (at worst). And of course, many people say there needs to be an age limit on driving or there needs to be required driving tests for people once they get to a certain age. And of course, we do nothing about this because, well, it’s a touchy subject.

White Conservative Bygone Dominance

Is there any other kind? Okay, I know I’m being completely condescending towards conservatives, but quite honestly, it’s hard not to be. Do I have to refrain from pointing out factual inaccuracies or flat-out bullshit for fear that a conservative might get upset and accuse me of a patronizing attitude?

Media’s Obtuse Un-Self-Aware Donald Trump Obsession

For the past few weeks, Donald Trump has dominated the news commentary shows. A common melody intoned from the mouths of hosts and guests is that Donald Trump is, well, trumping media coverage of all the other Republican candidates. The obtuseness of the media in its coverage of Donald Trump is nothing short of remarkable.

Ignore The Resolute Voices Of Regression

Some might see it as a noble refrain to say we shouldn’t use a tragedy to advance a political agenda (e.g. guns, confederate flag). But, it shouldn’t always be seen that way. First, this notion assumes all political agendas are equally sincere and rational, when we know this to be false. Some agendas are immensely more honorable than others. Second, it may be a nice notion to believe human beings can always solve big problems and address major issues (including human rights violations) when far removed from adversity and calamity, but unfortunately we mere human beings are more imperfect than we care to admit. Sometimes it is only in the wake of calamity, even when resolutely confronted by the voices of regression, that we are able to recognize and fix historical injustices.

Marriage Equality Fight Still Not Over After Supreme Court Ruling

Would you say the fight for reproductive rights is over in 2015? I didn’t think so. Much the same can be said for marriage equality, even after yesterday’s landmark Supreme Court ruling. Because no matter how much we may perceive a “rights issue” as finally reaching its pinnacle, in this case, capped by a 5-4 Supreme Court ruling making marriage equality the law in all 50 states, it doesn’t automatically change the minds of the regressive opposition.

Charleston Exposes ‘Individual Liberty’ Gun Ownership Lie

The murder of nine innocent people at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina exposes the America-born con that gun ownership is the thing that protects individual liberty. If only you could ask one of the dead how free they now feel. And if only there were more bullets flying in that church, might we finally realize America has reached its finest form of freedom.

Mike Huckabee Announces 2016 Presidential Bid

On Tuesday, Mike Huckabee announced he is running for president for a second time. During a campaign launch speech in Hope, Arkansas, Huckabee cast himself as outside the Washington elite establishment, you know, just an average guy with humble roots from a small town.
