The Republican Endgame: An America Where Big Ideas Are Dead

Republicans have become the party of “No we can’t” and Democrats have become the party of “Yes we can, but…”. Gone are the days of big ideas and big plans for the future. We no longer live in a country that is capable of shooting for the stars and solving big problems. Instead we are in a race to the bottom that has coincided with a political shift to the right that caters to rich and powerful interests.

Obamacare, Medicare, Veterans Affairs: The Conservative Cognitive Dissonance Is Deafening

There are countless conservatives in this country who support Medicare and support Veterans Affairs (VA) but are against the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). They are against the idea of universal health care at the federal level. There is a cognitive dissonance at play here that is rarely discussed during health care debates in the media. We take it at face value that conservatives are against federally controlled universal health care as a matter of principle, but apparently their principles are malleable when it comes to Medicare and Veterans Affairs.

Video: Obama Defends Women’s Health And Planned Parenthood

This past week President Obama showed his support for women’s health in a message delivered to Planned Parenthood supporters. The President draws a clear distinction between where he stands and where some on the Right stand, including “professional politicians” who want to “get rid of” Planned Parenthood. Of course this “professional politician” is Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. It’s been a common refrain to say Republicans are waging a war on women’s rights, but I don’t think it’s limited to just women. These Republicans, particularly social conservatives, are against anything they see as threatening the historical order (i.e. old white men making the decisions for everyone else).

Great Climate Change Article By A Republican Meteorologist

In a rare event from the conservative side of the aisle, a Republican meteorologist, Paul Douglas, penned a powerful article on the reality of climate change, how it is already affecting us, and how it will impact us long-term, particularly if so many continue to deny reality. I can’t say I agree with everything Douglas writes about in his article but even the parts I disagree with are still coming from the right place. For example, I do think private businesses will have to play a role in solving this problem but climate change is such a huge problem it will required mandates from governments around the world to effect any real change.
