On a recent episode of Last Week Tonight on HBO, host John Oliver dedicated a 15 minute segment to American apathy towards our aging nuclear weapons. Oliver said we spend more time worrying about whether we “accidentally hit Reply All on an office email” than we do worrying about “nuclear annihilation.”

Human beings are amazing. And I don’t discount myself from that statement, but I try really hard to not assume I know something to be true when it is in direct conflict with the experts of a given field. But for Republicans and conservatives, they have no problem “knowing” they are correct about something, even when they admit they are not experts.

Did you know winter disproves global warming? It’s true, that is, if you watch Fox News. I know this because Donald Trump told me during a segment on Fox & Friends. And everyone knows ‘The Donald’ never lies.

Well, it’s that time of year again. The time when Fox News viewers and your Uncle Bob dispense the usual liberal goading climate change denialism. You know, it’s snowing, it’s cold, therefore global warming is a hoax. There’s a blizzard, so time to make fun of Al Gore. It’s winter, hence no greenhouse effect.

There’s a lot of hot air (okay, that was too predictable) from climate change deniers in the run up to today’s UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Fifth Assessment Report. Some of these deniers are actually saying global warming has stopped or in some cases reversed. Remember, we aren’t talking about skeptics. These people are out-and-out denialists. They are unconcerned with facts and evidence. The only thing that matters in their narrow worldview is their “belief” that climate change is not real or not man-made.

You can’t connect any single weather event directly to climate change, but you can point to trends. And a climate change trend scientists are predicting is more severe and extreme weather events, and stronger more devastating hurricanes (a “new normal”). But why should we name these hurricanes using innocuous names like Andrew, Sandy, Ivan, and Katrina when there are much more suitable and deserving names to choose from. We should name hurricanes after prominent climate change deniers like Marco Rubio, Michele Bachmann, John Boehner, and Rick Perry.

But conservatives have managed to change the public discourse on climate change to the point where it’s shocking to find out a Republican governor actually believes climate change is real. I’m talking about Ohio Governor John Kasich who last week said the following to a GOP fundraiser audience:
