Occasionally I’ll watch a clip from one of the Sunday shows like Meet the Press, This Week or Face the Nation, but I can no longer bring myself to watch these shows in full. In Gallup’s pre-debate poll conducted September 30th to October 2nd, President Obama led Mitt Romney 50% to 45%. In Gallup’s post-debate poll conducted October 4th to October 6th, the race is now even at 47 percent. Gallup also asked who won the debate, and 72% said Romney, 20% said Obama. I’m not sure what debate that 20% were watching. Although to be fair, a number of people who said Obama won the debate may have ranked substance over style, and in that case, Obama did win the debate. But since style is unfortunately what matters in these debates, there is really no disputing that Romney won.

What are small business owners thinking about and looking for when it comes to hiring more workers? — Remember, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney (and his entire party) believe the biggest concern for small businesses is government regulations and taxation. After the Labor Department released the September job numbers, revealing the unemployment rate dropped to 7.8% (below 8% for the first time during Obama’s presidency), the right-wing lunatic asylum kicked into full-bore conspiracy mode. First we had “9/11 truthers, ” then we had “birth certificate truthers (birthers),” then just last week we had “poll truthers,” and now this week we have “unemployment truthers,” led by former GE CEO Jack Welch.

There goes one more Republican talking point against President Obama. Just as Mitt Romney and Republicans can no longer say there are fewer jobs now compared to when Obama took office, they also cannot say the unemployment rate has been above 8% for (x) months. That’s because today the Labor Department released September’s job numbers and the unemployment rate fell to 7.8% from 8.1% in August. It’s the lowest unemployment rate in 44 months, equaling the unemployment rate when President Obama took office. Note that the unemployment rate peaked at 10% later in 2009, so the economy has shown steady improvement for three years.

Mitt Romney won the first presidential debate on style, which is usually how these debates are won. Romney was aggressive and prosecutorial, and he never hesitated or delayed in his responses. He took charge of the debate from the beginning and never relinquished control.

To play off Lawrence O’Donnell’s analogy during MSNBC”s post-debate coverage, President Obama looked like the defense attorney during the first presidential debate. Mitt Romney looked like the aggressive prosecutor, and he was quite successful in that role tonight. I’m not talking about whether you agree on any issues of substance, I’m simply talking about debate style and body language. Mitt Romney aggressively directed his attention right at President Obama on multiple occasions. President Obama on the other hand seemed to focus most of his attention toward moderate Jim Lehrer or the camera.
