How Big A Government Do We Need?

Republicans talk about the size of government as if it can be measured against some predefined scale. They talk about big government but they don’t define how you measure the size of government. They say if government is big than freedom is small. But who makes these rules? If Republicans want us to believe that there is a proper size to government and any larger than that is a threat to freedom, shouldn’t they bare the burden of proof?

Only Days Before Election Day, Obama Gets To Be President

President Obama - Hurricane SandyThe Obama administration is showing us that big government can respond effectively during a national disaster. No response will ever be perfect but all indications point to a federal government well equipped to handle the challenge. This is what happens when you have competence in the White House and in other high government positions. This is what happens when we elect people who believe in government. And so, with only days until election day, Obama gets to be the president while Romney remains the politician. Let us not forget what happens when we elect people who say government is the problem — they get into office and prove it. (to paraphrase Bill Maher)

Federal Deficit: Did Someone Forget How Budgets Work? — It’s Spending AND Revenue

I know there is a line of thinking out there that posits once a president takes office, everything that happens within the federal government is under his control. This line of thinking was no less false when Bush was president then it is now when Obama is president. It’s not about blame, it’s about facts, and when it comes to the federal budget, and more specifically the year-after-year trillion-dollar plus deficits, it seems people need a few lessons.

A Thought On Punishing Undocumented Immigrants

Jimmy Smits - "Congressman Matthew Santos" -- The West WingWhile watching “The West Wing” episode titled (“La Palabra”, 3/9/2005), I was struck by a line delivered by Jimmy Smit’s character, congressman Matthew Santos. He was having a conversation with the governor of California, discussing a bill that had passed the state legislature and was awaiting a signature or veto from the governor. The bill would ban undocumented immigrants from obtaining a driver’s license.

By Favoring Money Romney Cements His Disregard for Environment

Prosperity - image by Mike Licht, NotionsCapital.comMuch of this year’s presidential election campaign has focused on the economy. While that’s certainly no great surprise, one topic that must be prioritized is the environment. Mitt Romney’s vow to de-regulate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to appease his fossil fuel burning donors clearly demonstrates he favors making money over protecting the environment. His blatant disregard for the environment is there for everyone to see. Why the Obama campaign hasn’t made more of this issue remains something of a mystery.

A Survey Of Small Business Owners Shows Demand Is Key To The Economy

On Sunday’s Up with Chris Hayes, they displayed a graphic showing the results of a survey of small business owners. The survey was conducted by Wells Fargo and the Gallup Small Business Index on September 13, 2012. The context is hiring concerns. What are small business owners thinking about and looking for when it comes to hiring more workers? — Remember, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney (and his entire party) believe the biggest concern for small businesses is government regulations and taxation. This survey reveals otherwise:

Unemployment Rate Falls To 7.8 Percent, Ending Another Republican Talking Point

There goes one more Republican talking point against President Obama. Just as Mitt Romney and Republicans can no longer say there are fewer jobs now compared to when Obama took office, they also cannot say the unemployment rate has been above 8% for (x) months. That’s because today the Labor Department released September’s job numbers and the unemployment rate fell to 7.8% from 8.1% in August. It’s the lowest unemployment rate in 44 months, equaling the unemployment rate when President Obama took office. Note that the unemployment rate peaked at 10% later in 2009, so the economy has shown steady improvement for three years.
