President Obama Presents Ambitious Plan To Curb Gun Violence
Today President Obama announced an ambitious plan, at least by 2013 standards, to curb America’s gun violence. Obama presented a legislative plan as well as immediate action in the form of 23 executive orders.
Highlights of the executive orders include: Requiring federal agencies to make available data that is relevant to federal background check system. — Address legal obstacles related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) that would prevent information from being available in a background check. — Attorney General review of categories of persons prohibited from owning a firearm. — Begin national campaign on safe and responsible gun ownership. — Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to study gun violence including causes and prevention. — Launch a national conversation on mental health, led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan.

In addition to executive orders, Obama laid the ground work for gun control legislation to be taken up by congress, including universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons, and a ban on magazines (ammunition clips) holding more than 10 bullets.
Leading up to Obama’s action plan is a litany of delusional thoughts and ideas from the conservative Right in this country. This includes the usual nonsense from the National Rifle Association (NRA), including a commercial where the NRA uses Obama’s daughters as political pawns. Of course, to which the NRA and their supporters would likely say that we (sensible Americans) are using the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy as pawns. To which I retort, “fuck you.” If you are unable to see the difference, I don’t feel the need to explain.
But it doesn’t stop there. While the sanity of the average person supporting the NRA’s stance is questionable, the jury is no longer out when it comes to the people who subscribe to one of the various Sandy Hook conspiracy theories. I have to tell you, I find myself a bit blindsided by this one. It was only yesterday that I learned of the various conspiracy theories that have gained traction. At this point I feel going into depth talking about them only gives these nuts more credit than they deserve. But I may write about it in the future if I feel compelled to do so.
So pick your side America. Most of us are reasonable and sensible people who find no reason to defend assault weapons and extended magazines. The rest are left to most certainly cling to their guns, and maybe their religion. But what is less certain is their residual grip on reality.
