Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson says he will not halt Pennsylvania’s voter ID law. Everyone else is calling the law “tough” but I call it “discriminatory,” and it matters little to me what one particular judge has ruled because I know what’s right and what’s wrong. It turns out that the reason Republicans stated we needed this law played little role in the judge’s decision.

It might seem like a difficult choice sometimes to vote at all, particularly if you live by the idea of voting for what is right. I guess a more nuanced approach would be to say you should vote for the candidate who is closer to what you believe is right. The game might be rigged, but don’t allow the candidate who is further from your values to win by not casting your vote. And I sincerely say this regardless of who you plan to vote for. I will lay out the case in article after article of why I think that should be Barack Obama, but you will have to vote your conscience, not mine.

The Obama campaign is suing Ohio to restore early voting for ALL Ohio voters, something Republican lawmakers in the state restricted to military service members only. In the 2008 election all Ohio voters had access to early voting. Mitt Romney, no stranger to lying, issued this statement on his Facebook page:

To be fair, I won’t lay all the blame at the feet of Republicans because as it turns out, Americans’ confidence in just about any institution you can name is at or near all-time lows. For the purpose of this short little diatribe I’m just going to focus on government and how Republicans have tarnished it for their political ideology.

Pennsylvania election official Christopher Broach says he will not enforce Pennsylvania’s voter ID law which requires voters to have a valid form of photo ID before they can vote. Republicans have passed these laws for one simple reason: to disenfranchise minority voters who are overwhelmingly likely to vote Democratic.

Let’s face it, Republicans are much better at messaging. They’ve had decades of practice in what to say and how to say it to get their message across. To be certain it’s all style and no substance, but Republicans are really good at it. Republicans have a way of framing a solution to a (real or imagined) problem so that the public hears it and believes that it is a common sense approach to an apparently serious problem. But Republicans count on the thought process ending right there. If people do a little more research and consideration of all the facts, a lot of Republican “ideas” start to break down. I’ll give you two examples.

At the same time that the Department of Justice is investigating Pennsylvania’s voter ID law, defendants of the law are publicly saying they have no evidence of in-person voter fraud. They admit they have no reports of fraud and no proof that a voter ID would make fraud less likely to occur (if attempted).

Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer Bob Warner reports, “More than 758,000 registered voters in Pennsylvania do not have photo identification cards from the state Transportation Department, putting their voting rights at risk in the November election, according to data released Tuesday by state election officials.” This is a staggering number and it represents over 9 percent of the over 8 million registered voters in Pennsylvania. The number of voters who will be disenfranchised this election is still unknown, and is not likely to ever be known, but based on this report we know over three-quarters of a million voters face the possibility of being turned away at the polls. This is just one state!
