I’m watching The Ed Show on MSNBC and the first half-hour has been all about the “fiscal cliff” (which we know is neither), and the Republican insistence that entitlement reform be part of any budget deficit deal.

Many Republicans think all that is needed is a re-tuning of their message. They simply need to tweak how they say things and suddenly it will be the nineteen-eighties all over again with Reagan-style electoral landslides. Republicans think there is no problem with conservatism itself, only the way they are delivering their message. — Hello, this is the party of Frank Luntz! Republicans are masters of sloganeering. They come up with simple concepts and phrases that roll off the tongue and appear common sense — that is, until you think about it for more than a moment.

There are some Republicans who recognize that their party needs to change if it’s going to be competitive in future presidential elections. Yes, Republicans still hold a majority in the House of Representatives, and Republicans will be able to easily win a number of Senate and House races for years to come, but it’s the top office in the land where the math is not in their favor. When you’ve lost California’s 55 electoral votes before the contest has even begun, that’s a problem.

Have you noticed when conservatives lose elections, they don’t really like democracy all that much? Many of them don’t even like the country they live in. The people who call themselves the true defenders of freedom and the real Americans resemble neither when they are on the short end of an election result.

A New York Post column (“The 49ers“) laments the potential job losses as a result of full implementation of “Obamacare.” The use of the term “Obamacare” in place of “Affordable Care Act” should be your first tip-off of what’s to come. The article’s author is Michael Tanner, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, which is a libertarian think tank. That should be your second tip-off.

There is one 9/11 where Al Qaeda terrorists led a coordinated strike using passenger jets that ended with nearly 3000 Americans dead. This 9/11 led us into two wars with the deaths of over 8000 coalition troops, and potentially tens of thousands (likely over one hundred thousand) Iraqi and Afghani deaths. This 9/11 led to a unified United States singing Kumbaya and near unanimous agreement (at least in the mainstream media and congress) in launching a war (Iraq) that had nothing to do with 9/11. This 9/11 resulted in at least a year or two of strong support for then president George W. Bush.

Raising the top tax rate 4.6 points to 39.6% is a radical idea that will mean the end of capitalism and will fundamentally change America forever.
