The Republican-controlled House of Representatives failed to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) during the 112th congress. This Monday the Senate will vote on reauthorization of VAWA.

Starting tomorrow a long list of preventive health benefits for women kicks in as part of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) provided a rebuke of Republican minority leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) call for a vote to repeal Obamacare. In her response she listed the women’s preventative benefits that will go into effect on August 1, 2012:

In a clash with Rachel Maddow on this past Sunday’s Meet the Press, Republican pundit Alex Castellanos said there are reasons why women make less than men, but even while saying that he denied they actually made less. Because in Castellanos’ mind, women aren’t making less when his “reasons” are taken into account.

This past week President Obama showed his support for women’s health in a message delivered to Planned Parenthood supporters. The President draws a clear distinction between where he stands and where some on the Right stand, including “professional politicians” who want to “get rid of” Planned Parenthood. Of course this “professional politician” is Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. It’s been a common refrain to say Republicans are waging a war on women’s rights, but I don’t think it’s limited to just women. These Republicans, particularly social conservatives, are against anything they see as threatening the historical order (i.e. old white men making the decisions for everyone else).
