I know there is a line of thinking out there that posits once a president takes office, everything that happens within the federal government is under his control. This line of thinking was no less false when Bush was president then it is now when Obama is president. It’s not about blame, it’s about facts, and when it comes to the federal budget, and more specifically the year-after-year trillion-dollar plus deficits, it seems people need a few lessons.

Federal Government Posts First Monthly Budget Surplus In Three Years

It’s a bit misleading, but the federal government had a $58 billion surplus in April according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The surplus is due to tax season, which results in an April surplus most years even if the yearly numbers are still deep in the red. It’s notable because there hasn’t been a surplus month in three years and it could be a sign of an improving economy.

PA Sen. Pat Toomey: Only A ‘Small Segment’ Of Americans Are In Need

Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) apparently believes the poverty problem in this country is overblown. At least that is what I interpret from his statement that Americans “who really need help” are only a “small segment of our society.” Toomey made these statements while unveiling the Senate Republican budget plan for 2013. Toomey and his budget cohorts have concluded that the current assistance programs “encourage dependency.” This is nothing new, many Republicans have made similar statements for years and decades. Every time I hear a Republican make a claim like this I ask, “where’s your proof?” Well OK, I haven’t asked them personally, but you know what I mean.

Obama Calls ‘Paul Ryan’ GOP Budget ‘Thinly Veiled Social Darwinism’, But There’s Nothing ‘Veiled’ About It

Speaking at an Associated Press luncheon on Tuesday, President Obama called Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) Republican budget plan “thinly veiled social Darwinism.” The president was referring to the budget’s massive tax cuts for the rich and steep cuts to programs for the poor. The GOP budget is nothing more than trickle-down economic theory, a religion to Republicans. It’s also the same economic theory that has for 30 years failed to produce even a trace of the “trickle down” promised.
