A Pledge To Never Raise Taxes Is Indefensible
To paraphrase MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, saying you will never raise taxes, only lower taxes, is indefensible. There is no intellectual argument that justifies signing a pledge stating you will never raise taxes under any circumstances.
Life is full of uncertainty. You do not know what the future holds. If you are an elected official, your obligation is to your town, your city, your state and your country. Your obligation is to the people, not a single person named Grover.
Grover Norquist, his tax pledge and those who have signed it offer an intellectual dishonesty unmatched by the most delinquent politicians in American history. You can call that hyperbole, but I’m done talking nicely about this. If you want an example of how to recklessly run a country into fiscal ruin, you need look no further than Republican anti-tax dogma.
