Secret Romney Fundraiser Video Shows His Disdain For Half The Country

David Corn over at Mother Jones obtained a secretly recorded video of a Romney fundraiser earlier this year. In the video Mitt Romney says:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what – These are people who pay no income tax.

[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. – SECRET VIDEO: Romney Tells Millionaire Donors What He REALLY Thinks of Obama Voters, Mother Jones

This is highly offensive, and that is a word I don’t use often. It epitomizes what I’m talking about when I say I cannot support politicians who assume the worst in people. So in Mitt Romney’s world, I’m part of this 47% that he is talking about. I must be a freeloader who is looking for a government handout. The audacity of a multi-millionaire who (at best) pays 13-14% in federal income taxes talking down to poor and middle class citizens about taxes and government entitlements is appalling. What do you call a 13% tax rate for a millionaire? If you ask me I’d say it’s one hell of an entitlement.

There are just too many people on the Right who think this way or at least condone this kind of thinking when they cast their vote for a Republican like Mitt Romney. Just look at the comments over at The Daily Caller

Examples of ugly human beings:

He didn’t say anything that wasn’t true.

The producers in the country are willing to work for their lifestyle.

The takers in this country aren’t willing to work for things they feel entitled to.

I think a commercial should be made of this by the Romney people. Everything is said is absolutely true!!! It’s repulsive and the independents would agree.
What dummy in the progressive tank thinks this will be damaging to Romney????
Nov. 6th can’t come soon enough.

The truth hurts! It’s about time it was said. You like people to stay poor? Because dems like their people poor and dumb. This way they have them in their corner forever.

Where is Romney.wrong? Every rational American knows he is correct

Finally, he speaks the truth! Of course obama panders to the people that he keeps down and out! He keeps them there so they can be dependent on him. Kinda like a drug pusher, gives you free drugs to get you hooked then he becomes your life line! Go Romney! Wish he would speak like that in campaign mode!

  • There is no way to spin this to make it look good for Romney, no matter how hard Republican pundits might try, as Ari Fleischer is currently trying to do on CNN. And Fleischer is repeating the meaningless stat that Romney used about 47% who don’t pay federal income tax. They always conveniently forget that many of these people are retired or make such a low income that they are exempt from federal taxes. This is not being rewarded. This is hardly an entitlement. I love how Republicans spin poverty and low-income jobs as a reward because they don’t have to pay federal income taxes. It’s stupid and it’s ridiculous. And all of these low-income workers pay payroll tax, state and local taxes, gasoline tax (if they drive), real estate tax (if they are lucky enough to own a home), sales tax, etc. Why is it that we can’t talk about the incredibly low tax rates that many corporations and millionaires are paying but Republicans have no problem preying on the poor and asking them to pay more in taxes? WTF is wrong with people?
