Republican Senate Candidate Tom Smith Says Out-of-Wedlock Pregnancy ‘Similar’ to Rape Pregnancy
Apparently there is no end to the GOP insanity, and we still have a Republican convention to contend with!
Today Pennsylvania Senate candidate Tom Smith compared his daughter’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy with a pregnancy occurring from rape. Smith was asked to comment on fellow GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” statement. Smith said, “What that congressman said I do not agree with at all — He should have never said anything like that.” Smith should have stopped right there but instead he added, “I lived something similar to that with my own family.” Speaking of his daughter’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy, Smith said, “She chose life and I commend her for that. She knew my views but fortunately for me…she chose the way I thought. Now don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t rape.” No sir, I don’t think anybody would call out-of-wedlock consensual sex ‘rape’. Is it really possible in 2012 that we can have people running for the United States Senate who say things like “legitimate rape” or compare rape to out-of-wedlock sex? In fact, why do we even need to define something as “out-of-wedlock” in the first place?
Smith was then asked if his daughter’s unwed pregnancy and rape were similar. “No, no, no. Put yourself in a father’s position, yes, I mean it is similar,” he said.
Asked again to clarify his statement, Smith said he wasn’t comparing the two. “No, I didn’t not say that,” Smith said. “I said I went through a situation (with a daughter). It’s very, very difficult.
