A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in”
Isn’t this the truth! I guess it’s possible that with age we begin to wax nostalgic for a better time that might never have actually existed, but it does seem like society is increasingly about today with little regard for tomorrow. I think this is especially true of politics in the United States. It seems the most important consideration of politicians is how a position on an issue will impact their re-election instead of how it will help or hurt the country long-term. Maybe politics has always been this way and I’m simply fooling myself to think their was a time when people gave more honest thought and consideration for future generations.
