Maher’s $1M Obama Super PAC Donation: All The Cool People Are Doing It
Comedian Bill Maher has been a consistent critic of President Obama and has shown no shortage of cynicism and humor directed at the corrupting influence of money in the political process. That’s why it came as a surprise when Maher announced last night, during a live stand-up performance on Yahoo! called CrazyStupidPolitics, a $1 million donation to the pro-Obama Super PAC, Priorities USA Action.
Maher said both seriously and humorously, “I would like to announce tonight a donation to the Obama Super PAC which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name Priorities USA Action. I know, it was named by Borat.”
It anyone was left wondering if Maher was serious or not, he tweeted this before the show…
Most important advice I ever got in show business, as true today as then: always bring ur wallet onstage

and then followed up with this tweet after the show…
Thank u everybody who’s hit me up after the show, and a great San Jose audience. Obama donation was a surprise to Yahoo too fyi!

I’m left wondering what I should make of this. I loath the corrupting influence of money in politics but at the same time appreciate the support for Obama when he can use all the support he can get with the money flowing into Super PACs that support Republican candidates. I also “religiously” watch Real Time with Bill Maher and I agree with Maher on many, but not all, issues. I guess in the end nothing has changed. There’s big money in politics, Obama is the best (by far) candidate, and I’ll continue to watch Real Time.
I know if this was a famous conservative donating $1M to a pro-Romney Super PAC my commentary would likely have more bite.
