Obama’s Faith: Shall I Remind You There Is No Religious Test?
It has become obvious Republicans aren’t going to win on the economy alone so naturally the discourse has shifted to the culture wars. For the past two weeks it’s been birth control 24/7 and now it’s shifted to questioning President Obama’s faith.
First up, at a recent town hall meeting in Florida, a Rick Santorum supporter said President Obama is a Muslim with no legal right to hold the office. The unidentified woman said she doesn’t call Obama ‘President’ because, in her uninformed opinion, he is not legally President. She went on to say, “He constantly says that our Constitution is passe” and “He is an avowed Muslim, and my question is, why isn’t something being done to get him out of our government? He has no legal right to be calling himself President.” What was Santorum’s response? “Well, yeah, I’m doing my best to get him out of the government.” Way to go Santorum, quelling the false accusations of an uninformed supporter. Well, to be fair, that would leave precious time for campaigning. What is a Republican candidate to do?
Next up, in an appearance on Morning Joe, Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) said that Obama says he’s a Christian “so I just have to assume that he is.” Hey Graham, with a remark like that, why not get it over with and join Santorum’s anonymous supporter? Here, I’ll throw in a used but good condition ‘Obama is A Socialist Muslim’ sign that was leftover from the last Tea Party rally.
There is no religious test for office in this country even if Santorum, Graham and many Christians think there should be.
No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.
– United States Constitution, 3rd paragraph of Article VI
Obama is not a Muslim, but even if he was, so what? Did you miss the part about ‘no religious test’?
What are the human values of those who believe they are righteous and superior because of their ‘chosen’ faith? What are the American values of those who think there is a religious test to hold office in this country? They display a thorough lack of understanding of the history of this country, what makes it great, and what makes our Constitution special. Nowhere in that important document will you find the words “Christian” or “God”.
They might be questioning Obama’s faith, but I’m questioning their values.
