15 Obama Achievements Amid Relentless Republican Obstructionism

This time of year there is no shortage of lists recapping news events. Instead of a 2011 recap of President Obama’s accomplishments, I think it is more important to remember the most significant accomplishments of the first three years of his administration. With the Republican presidential primary season about to start in earnest with the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire Primary in the first two weeks of the new year, we should reflect on the many great accomplishments of the Obama administration amid relentless Republican obstructionism.

Below is a list of 15 significant accomplishments that is in no particular order and is not intended as a complete list.

  1. Increased average fuel economy standards from 27.5mpg to 35.5mpg starting in 2016 and 54.5 starting in 2025
  2. Established Credit Card Bill of Rights – preventing credit card companies from imposing arbitrary rate increases on customers
  3. Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010 – preventing insurance companies from denying insurance because of a pre-existing condition – allowing children to remain covered by their parents’ insurance until the age of 26 – Require health insurance plans to disclose how much of the premium actually goes to patient care
  4. Signed financial reform law – establishing a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to look out for the interests of everyday Americans – requiring lenders to verify applicants’ credit history, income, and employment status – prohibiting banks from engaging in proprietary trading (trading the bank’s own money to turn a profit, often in conflict with their customers’ interests)
  5. Adverted a second great depression and created more private sector jobs in 2010 than during entire Bush years
  6. The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act – promoted social responsibility through creation of serve.gov, a national database of volunteer opportunities
  7. Signed New START Treaty – nuclear arms reduction pact with Russia
  8. Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act – Instituted equal pay for women
  9. Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) to allow gay and lesbian members of the military to serve openly
  10. US auto industry rescue plan
  11. Enacted largest reform of student aid in 40 years
  12. Osama bin Laden
  13. Removed restrictions and provided support for embryonic stem-cell research and new biomedical research
  14. Presidential Memorandum extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees
  15. End of the war in Iraq

Bankrupted the USA…..and did what Republicans could not do in 50 years the DEATH of Liberalism ..Thank you President Gun Runner

    • You do know that the last Bush budget is the first one that skyrocketed to well over a $1 trillion deficit, right? And this happened at the same time as the worst recession since the great depression (which greatly reduced tax revenue) and during the era of the “Bush tax cuts.” Add it up and it means massive deficits year after year. Obama didn’t bankrupt the USA, he inherited a massive federal deficit (that cannot be rectified overnight) along with a wrecked economy. I know Republicans don’t want to talk about this because it’s in the past, but facts matter if we are going to solve problems.

And to say he bankrupted the USA is also nonsense because a sovereign country that can print it’s own money technically can’t go bankrupt. That’s not to say there are all kinds of bad things that can happen if you keep printing money but they only way the USA goes bankrupt is for the world to go bankrupt with us.

And you should know I don’t come to my conclusions on where to stand on issues because I’m automatically against a group of people or a party. Can you say the same?

But since your comment had zero substance I’m not sure why I’m even responding at all. But don’t let that stop you from replying. I’d love to hear your responses.

      • Hellpig

you responded because you are a “Useful Idiot” my comment had the only two truths that matter..and OweBamaCare will bankrupt America but you don’t care do you? you mean the last Bush budget ohh yeah the one Pelosi and Reid are responsible for …yup you are correct. so lets see President HateDaJews spends more then Bush in 3.5 years then Bush did in 8 yeah you stick with that logic it worked so well for you guys Nov 2010. as for the QE President Amnesty has had 2 and wants another….cant blame Bush for that but I am sure you will try. Speaking of Budgets how come President Food Stamp has not had one since he took office? oh yeah “we the people” would impeach his treasonous ass if they found out WTF you commie fucks are up to….but “we the people” have awakened and I also Thank President Downgrade for that.

        • So it’s congress who is responsible for the budget when it’s a Republican president and it’s the president who is responsible for the budget when it’s a Democratic president. Sorry, try again.

Are you incapable of making your case with the facts only? When ever few words is a insults or name-calling it doesn’t make for a very cogent argument on your part.

          • JS

David, everyone is SO tired of Obama and his supporters continuing to blame Bush after nearly 4 YEARS of Obama being in office! It is WAY past time for Obama to begin taking responsitblility! After all, Obama himself said he would fix the economy in less than 4 years or he will be a one-term president!

The below is a history lesson. Please don’t read this if you
are afraid of the truth. It is history and nothing can change it. It explains the fallacy of putting all the blame on Bush.

The day the Democrats took over was not January 22nd, 2009 it was actually January 3rd, 2007, the day the Democrats took over the House of Representativesand the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress.

The Democratic Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995. For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is “Bush’s Fault”, think about this: January 3rd, 2007, the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress:

The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77

The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%

            The Unemployment rate was 4.6%

George Bush’s Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!

Remember that day…January 3rd, 2007… was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.

The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy? Answer; the part where the Democrats were in charge.

THANK YOU DEMOCRATS (especially Barney) for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment…to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCO’S! The DOW is back up, but that is due to wholesale FIRING OF EMPLOYEES TO INCREASE BOTTOM LINE PROFITS !!!

BTW: Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie -starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the US economy. Barney blocked it and called it a “Chicken Little Philosophy” (and the sky did fall!)

And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac?

            Answer: OBAMA

And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie?

Answer: OBAMA and the Democrat Congress, especially BARNEY!!!!

So when someone tries to blame Bush……

REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007…. THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!

Bush may have been in the car but the Democrats were in charge of the gas pedal and steering wheel they were driving the economy into the ditch.

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party.

Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 & 2011.

In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budget.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009.

Let’s remember what the deficits looked like during that period:

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.

If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.

In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is “I inherited a deficit that I voted for, and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.”

“The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.” – Dan Corfall

          • Thanks for the history lesson but you completely missed the point I was making. I bring up Bush not to put emphasis on him or blame him but to make the point that Obama inherited a mess. Anybody (left or right) who thinks a president who inherits that mess could turn the economy around to boom times in less than 4 years is smoking something.

In much of your diatribe you seem to put emphasis on the Democrats who controlled congress starting in 2006 as the reason for bad things but you put no blame at all on Bush. But then when we fast forward to Obama as president you flip it around and put the blame on the president and not on congress.

Ah, but I hear you saying “Obama had a Democratic majority congress.” That is indeed correct and it’s a big reason (really the only reason) that the stimulus and health care reform passed. Both of which are indeed positives, but I know you don’t believe that. So be it. But since 2010 it’s been obstruction city by the Republican majority in the House and the Republican minority (filibuster) in the Senate. If you want to blame Obama for not getting the economy going and not blame congress then it is you who is ignoring the facts. The most glaring fact relates to the American Jobs Act that was proposed by Obama last September, a comprehensive piece of jobs legislation that congress has completely ignored, particularly the Republican controlled house. So that fact is, if you want to say Obama’s policies have been bad for the economy, well, it would require us to actually try his policies first. I’m still waiting for congress to allow that to happen. The stimulus stopped us from going off the cliff, the American Jobs Act would accelerate job growth beyond the 4 million jobs created over the past 3 years. Since the American Jobs Act is not in effect that means we aren’t living under Obama’s policies, instead we are living under a status quo of “do nothing” because of an obstructionist congress.

At the end of the day, both the left and right put WAY too much emphasis on the president when it comes to jobs. I definitely know I’m guilty of it and based on what you’ve said here you certainly are guilty of it as well. And that comes back to my original point. I wasn’t “blaming” Bush for the economy. I was pointing out the facts that got us to where we are today. If you inherit a $1.4 trillion deficit in the middle of a really bad economy (whether that’s Bush’s fault or the fault of Democrats in congress is not the point) then it’s going to take some time to reverse course. If you have any sense of how budgets work you must know that you can’t significantly impact the budget year-to-year. Big changes in the budget only happen over a long period of incremental changes. And at the same time, when you have a bad economy, it worsens the deficit. It’s also the worst time to try to balance the budget. But that would get us into a supply side vs. demand side argument that we are not likely to resolve.

It seems you are the one who is looking to lay blame somewhere in this discussion. The point of this article is to point out what Obama has accomplished since becoming president admit a really bad economy, a huge budget deficit and an obstructionist congress (even when it was controlled by Democrats). OK, that last one could be considered blame but well, it’s also a fact.

To all the Obama worshippers. Stop letting your emotions and your false beliefs rule your life. If you would instead let the FACTS be your guide, your life and your decisions would be MUCH better! Here below are the FACTS of Obama’s “accomplishments” :

    OBAMA’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

    1. Federal debt has increased by 48% from $10.6 trillion to $15.7 trillion. The biggest increase by a president in history.
    2. Increased unemployment despite the nearly trillion dollar “stimulus package”, of which he promised would lower unemployment to under 5% … yet it is still stuck above 8% today.
    3. The country has had the longest streak of +8% unemployment since the Depression under Obama: 41 months and counting.
    4. Americans on food stamps have increased 42% from 31.8 million to 45.2 million … that is 1 out of every 7 Americans are on food stamps.
    5. Forced “Obamacare” down our throats despite EVERY poll showing majority of Americans were opposed to it
    6. Stopped the Keystone pipeline that would have created thousands of jobs.
    7. First President in history to have ALL his records SEALED.
    8. Gave half a billion tax payer’s dollars to Solyndra, of which promptly turned into a failure.
    9. Circled the globe to publicly apologize for America’s world leadership.
    10. Got our credit rating downgraded from AAA to AA+ for the first time since 1917
    11. Is knee deep in the “Fast and Furious” scandal – of which involves selling guns to drug runners used to kill our border control agents.
    12. Backed release of Lockerbie Bomber.
    13. Filed lawsuit against Arizona for enforcing immigration laws.
    14. Americans living in poverty have increased by 16% from 39.8 million to 46.2 million.
Poverty is now at its highest level since 1965.
    15. Total unemployment (U6) has increased by 68% from 13.7 million to 23 million.
    16. Price of gasoline has went from $1.86/gal on Obama’s first day in office to $3.49/gallon now … an increase of 88%.
    17. Home foreclosures per year have increased by 34% from 850,000 to 1,140,000.
    18. Total bankruptcy filings per year have increased by 42% from 1,117,641 to 1,593,081.
    19. Over 50% of the stimulus was spent overseas on foreign companies and investments.
    20. First President to appoint 45 UNELECTED ‘czars’ to replace ELECTED officials in his office. The problem with Czars is that they report to no one but Barack Obama. They have far reaching powers and Congress cannot stop a single decision they make. So much for checks and balances. Barack Obama reigns.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO FIX THE DAMAGE WROUGHT BY THIS FRAUD?

    • Many of your statistics are things that don’t materialize overnight or even over just a few years. Many of them are systemic problems that only get created and then get worse over a much longer time frame, say the time frame that we’ve tried the trickle-down economics experiment. And since many of the figures you present here like (poverty, debt, food stamps, credit downgrade, unemployment) are a result of longstanding systemic issues.

I will again point out that no single president is to blame. Not Obama, not Bush. But I can say that ALL U.S. presidents since at least Ronald Reagan but possibly back to Nixon are collectively responsible (along with all of the elected congresses during that time). You don’t just wake up and find you have a poverty problem overnight. Same for debt, food stamps and even long-term unemployment. These things take a failure of government to enact the policies necessary to reverse course and I hate to break it to you, it’s not more free market, trickle-down nonsense that is going to turn things around.

Even though we’ve had periods of booming economies over the past 30+ years those booming economies masked the fact that greater numbers of Americans were getting left behind. This is what happens when government is slowly taken over by the powerful, elite and wealthy individuals. When the net worth of the average person serving in congress is many times the net worth of the average American (and widening every year), that’s a problem. It means that our elected officials are increasingly out of touch with the average American. And with that, the Republican Party in 2012 decided it was going to nominate Mitt Romney, because who else can better represent this growing economic divide in America?

But even with all of my apparent government bashing in this comment I still believe in a government of We the People whereas it seems increasingly Republicans want government to fail. It’s hard to have a real debate when one side still believes in government working for everyone and the other side wants to drown it in the bathtub to paraphrase Grover Norquist. When you don’t believe in government, it makes it awful easy to get into office, obstruct and then go, “There see, government can’t work. Told ya so.”

      • JS

@ David : Yes, I agree to a certain point that the statistics I mentioned don’t materialize overnight. And I know it was a bad situation when Obama took over. HOWEVER, what Obama did was take a bad situation and make it worse! Here below are just a FEW examples:

        1. The federal debt today is now 16.1 tillion dollars – a 5.5 trillion dollar increase since Obama has been president (the largest increase by one president in history. Are you going to blame that on the presidents of the past?).
        2. Obama passed a nearly trillion dollar “stimulus package”, of which he promised would lower unemployment to around 5% … yet it is still stuck close to 8% today.
        3. Obama promised he would cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term in office, but he has obviously not done that.
        4. Obama had 2 full years of both a democratic House and a democratic Senate to get things done his way. BUT, he did not asccomplish anything but pass a healthcare bill that EVERY poll showed nobody wanted! He spent all that time ramming his Obamacare down our throats instead of devoting his attention to fixing the economy! (I suppose in the end it doesn’t matter, since he has proven he has no idea how to fix the economy).

If I spent more time, I’m sure I can think of other examples of Obama’s failures that had nothing to do with your basic premise that everything in regards to the current economy is a result of “what happened in the past”. It is time for OBAMA to accept responsibility for his failures!

Let’s hope Obama will keep his promise when he said: “I’ll resign if I don’t turn the economy around by the end of four years.”

        • Yes, he can accept responsibility for failures, and he has done so on numerous occasions, something that W. was unable to do when asked to name something he failed on (toward the end of his presidency). As for your points…

          1. Do you know how budgets work? Do you know how year-to-year federal spending works? Do you understand what impact the Great Recession had to both the revenue and spending sides of the ledger? The first budget that shot over $1 trillion was Bush’s last budget, and that was because of the economy. Tax revenue has not returned to pre-recession levels and yes, In fact, the deficit has actually come down over Obama’s first term. Yes, it’s still massive, but if we were to cut spending massively to reduce that deficit, what do you think that would do to the economy?

          2. This one is getting really old. Yes, they were wrong to promise that unemployment would stay under 8, but that is not proof the stimulus didn’t work, it’s instead proof that they over-promised and that a bigger stimulus was needed to fulfill that promise.

          3. Again, another promise that never should have been made because NO president would have been able to accomplish that given the Great Recession. The problem is that we didn’t know just how deep the recession was until hindsight. But yes, this was a campaign promise that was foolish at best.

          4. I’ve written about this before, but Obama did not have full rein of the legislature in his first two years. Since Republicans were hell-bent on obstructing on everything that meant Democrats needed a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, something they actually only had for a relatively short period of time during those first two years due to illness (Byrd, Kennedy, etc.). I’ve written an article about this: http://leftcall.com/the-lie-obamas-free-rein-democratic-controlled-111th-congress/

          • JS

David, in regards to your statement that Obama accepts responsibility
for his failures – to borrow a famous line from the funniest movie of all time
-“Surely, you can’t be serious!” (from the movie “Airplane”, in case you are
wondering). And the idea that Obama has accepted responsibility for his
failures is just as hilarious as that line from the movie!

Obama has spent the past 4 years blaming other people and
other situations/conditions for his failures. He has especially blamed Bush for
almost everything under the sun. It is almost 4 years later since Obama has
been in office and he STILL is blaming Bush. LOL.

You also made the statement about Bush (regarding accepting
responsibility) of “…something that W. was unable to do when asked to
name something he failed on (toward the end of his presidency).” Ok, make what
you want out of that, but GWB still didn’t go around constantly blaming other
people and other things, as Obama has done.

            Here below is my
responses to your replies to my points in my previous post:

            1. You can make all the generic
blah-blah statements you want, but the FACT is that when Obama entered
office, the federal debt was 10.6 trillion; and now, less than 4 years
later, it is 16.1 trillion – the biggest increase of any one president in history. The
federal debt has went up, not down. Obama is going in the wrong direction…
            big-time!

            2. Why do you say the statement I made
“is getting really old”? It is the undeniable truth! If it is “getting
old” then it is because Obama supporters such as yourself are getting
tired of being reminded of one of the many failures of Obama. Obama making
a promise and not delivering is obviously a failure.. Anything else
afterwards is just excuses. And in your last sentence you said that “a
bigger stimulus was needed to fulfill that promise.” Are you kidding?? You
actually want to waste MORE money on a policy that clearly doesn’t work?
            LOL!
And speaking of the stimulus, That law provided for
spending on everything from infrastructure to energy to education and health.
Tax reductions made up only about one fourth of the stimulus package.
“Shovel-ready” projects were at the heart of the package. Critics
state that such projects take years to implement and that the benefit can come
well after the recovery takes hold. President Obama himself eventually admitted
that there really is no such thing as a shovel-ready project.
            3. In regards to
this point, you said: “Again, another promise that never should have been made
because NO president would have been able to accomplish that given the Great
Recession. The problem is that we didn’t know just how deep the recession was
until hindsight.” You are once again making excuses for Obama. As I said
earlier, the act of making a promise and not delivering is clearly a failure.
You keep mentioning this “Great Recession” we had. What you
convenently fail to remember is that, in 1980, Ronald Reagan inherited a WORSE
            recession that Obama did.
Can you imagine double digit unemployment? Can you imagine
21% interest rates? Inflation was through the roof, interest rates through the
roof, and the value of money was deteriorating right in front of us. Carter
gave a speech that basically said he blamed the American people and basically
said it was hopeless and there was nothing we can do. What did Reagan do?
Reagan did what Obama has said over and over of “That was tried before and it
didn’t work!” He (Reagan) slashed income tax rates across the board. He slashed
the corporate income tax rate, and you know what happened? Not only did money
in this country came off the sidelines and started getting invested, but money
from all over the world poored into this country. Because he knew that “If I
slashed rates lower than the rest of the industrialized world, they’ll be
outsourcing their jobs to us.” What else did he do? He slashed the capital
gains tax. He made it more easier to deduct investment, RMD, capital expenses.
Did he do it all for the rich? No. It actually benefitted EVERYBODY!
Reagan didn’t spend his time in office blaming Carter for
the economy, instead he (Reagan) just did what it took to turn the economy
around. Basically, Reagan got Carter’s debt and fixed it. Obama gat Bush’s debt
            and made it worse.
Proof is now abundant that Obama is not doing the job. But
still, Democrats want to continue to support his FAILURE.So, yes, Reagan inherited a worse economy than Obama did,
but you never heard the Gipper pass the buck to President Carter. Instead he
revived the economy with massive tax reform and a business-friendly regulatory
environment. By 1984, Reagan was able to run on the slogan, “It’s morning again
            in America.”
Obama’s slogan is, “Give me 4 more years so I can finish the job of sinking our
country into a bottomless pit.” My point in all this is that Reagan inherited a
worse economy than Obama did. Yet Reagan did turned it around. Thus, it is a false
belief being spread by such people as you and the liberal media when you say it
is impossible for anyone to make big improvements within 4 years. I have just
given you proof that it HAS been done and it CAN be done! Obama has obviously proven he is not up to the task.4. Again,
this is more excuses you are spewing. The Democrats had contol of both the
House AND the Senate, yet Obama did nothing with that except he focused
the vast majority of his attention during that time on ramming his
healthcare bill down the American people’s throats … a bill that every
poll showed nobody wanted! In regards to your views that “the Republicans obstructing everything”, did you stop
to think that maybe it was a GOOD thing if obstructed some things? Maybe
whatever it was they obstructed NEEDED to be obstructed! With all the evidence I have present in this post – and my
other posts as well – I have overall proved without a shadow of a doubt of the
total failure of the Obama presidency. Any reasonable thinking person can
easily see it. If you can read all the facts I have presented and STILL support
Obama, then you either have your head stuck in the sand or you have much more
serious problems than I can help you with.
So, yes, Reagan inherited a worse economy than Obama did,
but you never heard the Gipper pass the buck to President Carter. Instead he
revived the economy with massive tax reform and a business-friendly regulatory
environment.
Obama has obviously proven he is not up to the task.
            4. Again,
this is more excuses you are spewing. The Democrats had contol of both the
House AND the Senate, yet Obama did nothing with that except he focused
the vast majority of his attention during that time on ramming his
healthcare bill down the American people’s throats … a bill that every
            poll showed nobody wanted!

David, I am glad to see you have now seen the facts and finally realize the truth that Obama is a total failure. Now if we can quickly get those facts out to the publlic that I have presented, and do it before the election, then maybe we can save our country after all.

          • There’s no credibility in labeling any president, let alone the current president, a “total failure.” But hey, if it satisfies you intellectually then good for you.

Ok, I have to admit that you are right: Obama has not been a total failure. Because, after all, with ALL the golf he has played over the last 4 years, he DID manage to improve his golf game….

          • Romney will soon have plenty of time to improve his golf game.
