Your Brain On Religion: FRC Blames ‘Sexual Liberalism’ For Boston Marathon Bombing
This Is Your Brain On Religion
The Family Research Council (FRC), no stranger to magical thinking, says “sexual liberalism” and “religious hostility” are at least partially to blame for the Boston Marathon bombing. In a message to its supporters, the FRC voiced opposition to sensible gun safety legislation saying, “In a truly bipartisan vote, the Senate spoiled the White House’s chances for eroding the Second Amendment–and privacy rights–through a government overreach on firearm background checks.”
None of this should come as a surprise. And I guess neither should this:
If Congress wants to stop these tragedies [Newtown and Boston], then it has to address the government’s own hostility to the institution of the family and organizations that can address the real problem: the human heart. As I’ve said before, America doesn’t need gun control, it needs self-control. And a Congress that actively discourages it–through abortion, family breakdown, sexual liberalism, or religious hostility–is only compounding the problem.
Conservatives love to call liberals naive when we say the world needs less violence, and therefore fewer guns. But conservatives insist on faith and belief as the cornerstones of any good logical argument. They believe you can simply will the outcome you want, rather than lifting a finger, doing something sensible to make that outcome a reality.
There will always be human beings who will commit horrible acts, and of course we should try to address the underlining social conditions and mental issues that push people over the edge. But it’s asinine to exempt guns from the conversation. Guns make it easier for people to kill or injure large numbers of human beings in a short time period. Until we change a culture that embraces, even worships at the alter of the mighty firearm, gun violence will continue to plague this country.
