Gun Control: Public Shame For Senators Who Blocked Extended Background Checks (Complete List)

The 45 Senators (not counting Harry Reid, more on that later) who voted “no” on sensible gun safety legislation, a bill that would have extended background checks to include gun shows and online purchases, should be publicly shamed. Morning Joe on MSNBC did their part this morning as well as websites like The Huffington Post and Mother Jones.

Below is The Left Call’s contribution to the public shaming of cowardly Senators who care more about their jobs than public safety.

SENATORS WHO VOTED “AGAINST” EXTENDED BACKGROUND CHECKS

First the Democrats, who deserve extra-special shaming:

Max Baucus (MT)
Mark Begich (AK)
Heidi Heitkamp (ND)
Mark Pryor (AR)

Now the Republicans:

Lamar Alexander (TN)
Kelly Ayotte (NH)
John Barrasso (WY)
Roy Blunt (MO)
John Boozman (AR)
Richard Burr (NC)
Saxby Chambliss (GA)
Dan Coats (IN)
Tom Coburn (OK)
Thad Cochran (MS)
Bob Corker (TN)
John Cornyn (TX)
Mike Crapo (ID)
Ted Cruz (TX)
Michael Enzi (WY)
Deb Fischer (NE)
Jeff Flake (AZ)
Lindsey Graham (SC)
Chuck Grassley (IA)
Orrin Hatch (UT)
Dean Heller (NV)
John Hoeven (ND)
Jim Inhofe (OK)
Johnny Isakson (GA)
Mike Johanns (NE)
Ron Johnson (WI)
Mike Lee (UT)
Mitch McConnell (KY)
Jerry Moran (KS)
Lisa Murkowski (AK)
Rand Paul (KY)
Rob Portman (OH)
James Risch (ID)
Pat Roberts (KS)
Marco Rubio (FL)
Timothy Scott (SC)
Jeff Sessions (AL)
Richard Shelby (AL)
John Thune (SD)
David Vitter (LA)
Roger Wicker (MS)

Special Note:

Harry Reid (D-NV) voted “no,” but he actually supports the bill. I’m not an expert on Senate procedure, but apparently he had to vote no to allow the possibility of reintroducing the bill at a later date.

Now let’s give a shout out to the four Republicans who voted for sensible gun safety.

REPUBLICAN SENATORS WHO VOTED “FOR” EXTENDED BACKGROUND CHECKS

Susan Collins (ME)
Mark Kirk (IL)
John McCain (AZ)
Pat Toomey (PA) – An extra-special shout out to my home state Senator, Pat Toomey. I pretty much disagree with him on everything, but he did go against his party to not only vote on this legislation, but also co-sponsor it along with Joe Manchin (D-WV).

To all Democrats who voted for the legislation, you are congratulated. Please don’t let this issue fade away. If the Newtown families are willing to press on, so should you.

The lists above were published by Mother Jones on Wednesday.
