You Like Guns? “No…Because I’ve Seen What They Can Do.”
On a recent episode of “Touch” starring Kiefer Sutherland, there was an exchange that went like this:
Calvin Norburg (Lukas Haas): You like guns?
Martin Bohm/Bishop (Kiefer Sutherland): No, not really.
Calvin Norburg: No? Why not?
Martin Bohm/Bishop: Because I’ve seen what they can do. The impact of a bullet on flesh, it gets messy close-up.
This is not to say that everyone who has seen the damage that guns can do is anti-gun. It also doesn’t mean that people who have not seen what they can do are pro-gun. Like the carnage that can be inflicted by guns, public support for or against gun control legislation is messy. But I do think a lot of pro-gun advocates have never witnessed first-hand the bloody destruction that guns can inflict on innocent people. And I think there are more than a few pro-gun people out there who might change their minds if they did have that experience. Of course, this is an experience you do not wish even on your worst enemy. And so that is why the issue of gun control will always remain a messy issue. Martin Bohm’s responce to Calvin Norburg is a response to a life experience that nobody should have to endure.
